FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions 

Q: Is RPL a college course? 
A: No. RPL is not a course or training program. It is an assessment process that evaluates your professional experience and education through an exam and interview.

Q: Will I receive a diploma or college certificate after completing RPL? 
A: No. While you will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion from AECENS, it is not a diploma and is not issued by a college or university.

Q: Can I use the RPL Certificate for credit at a college or university? 
A: No. The RPL process through AECENS is not transferable to college or university PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition) systems.

Q: Who is eligible to apply for RPL? 
A: You must have: 

  • At least 6,500 hours of experience working as an ECE, and 

  • A valid Nova Scotia ECE Entry Level Classification, Level 1 Classification, or School-Age Designation

Q: Do I have to pay to apply for the RPL Program? 
A:No. The RPL Program is fully funded through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, coordinated by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). However, you may be responsible forexam and interview re-write fees, if you choose to re-write an exam or re-take an interview.

Q: Is there a deadline to apply for RPL? 
A: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but spots may be limited. It’s best to apply early if you're interested.

Q: What if English is not my first language? 
A: You will need to submitproof of English proficiency, such as an IELTS score of Level 7 or higher, or an equivalent certification from another recognized organization.

Q: Can I apply if I don’t have an ECE diploma, but have years of work experience? 
A: Yes, as long as you meet the required 6,500 hours of experience and hold the appropriate classification from the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Q: What happens after I pass the RPL assessment? 
A: You will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion to submit to the DEECD to apply for a Level 2 Classification upgrade.
